Yangon palm oil rate holds at K6,585 amid overcharging fears

Palm oil wholesale prices remained at 6,585 kyat per viss in Yangon markets for three weeks through Oct. 23, but retail costs exceeded the government benchmark. The Supervisory Committee on Edible Oil Import and Distribution calculates weekly reference rates by tracking Malaysian and Indonesian FOB prices, then adding transportation expenses, tariffs, and banking fees. The Consumer Affairs Department warned vendors against price manipulation under the Essential Goods and Services Law after receiving complaints through its hotline 1535 and social media channels. Myanmar imports 700,000 tonnes of palm oil annually from Malaysia and Indonesia to supplement domestic production of 400,000 tonnes against total consumption of one million tonnes.
