Next-gen Xbox Magnus may cost over $999

Microsoft's upcoming Xbox console may carry a retail price exceeding $1,000, according to industry insider Kepler L2 from NeoGAF forums. The system features an AMD Magnus processor and incurs manufacturing costs that are more than double the Xbox Series X's $650 production expense. Microsoft cannot offset expenses through traditional game sales commissions if the console supports Steam and third-party digital storefronts as expected. The company faces challenges subsidizing hardware costs without guaranteed revenue from its marketplace.

The elevated pricing could reshape competition with Sony's PlayStation 6. Kepler L2 suggests Sony might struggle to offer an affordable disc-free PlayStation 6 model without substantial financial losses, given Xbox's weakened market position. Microsoft's brand reputation has suffered from recent price increases for hardware and Game Pass subscriptions alongside studio closures and staff reductions. The Magnus console may become the most expensive gaming system released, but it could deliver superior performance specifications compared to PlayStation 6.

Xbox CEO Sarah Bond's recent comments align with positioning the next console as a premium gaming option. The system aims to provide enhanced performance over competing platforms despite modest specification advantages. Sony essentially operates without major competition, given Xbox's current market challenges. The high-end approach represents a shift in Microsoft's console strategy toward luxury gaming experiences.
