A Uganda Christian University law student died on Tuesday after sustaining injuries from a motorcycle taxi crash the previous day. Angela Namirembe was a third-year Bachelor of Laws student at the institution's Kampala campus when the accident occurred. The School of Law remembered her as a passionate student who inspired classmates through her dedication to justice.
Motorcycle taxis cause nearly 45 percent of Uganda's road deaths, according to the 2023 police traffic report. The National Road Safety Council found most victims fall between the ages of 18 and 35. Authorities cite poor road discipline and helmet neglect as primary accident factors, but enforcement remains inadequate in Kampala, where thousands depend on the transport mode daily.
Legislator Betty Nambooze Bakireke called the death a reminder of risks within the unregulated sector. Students and colleagues expressed grief while demanding better campus safety infrastructure and stricter traffic penalties. The family has not announced funeral arrangements.
