EC, police set rules for 2026 parliamentary nominations in Kampala

The Electoral Commission and Kampala Metropolitan Police finalized preparations for parliamentary candidate nominations on Wednesday and Thursday. Justice Simon Byabakama said the commission would conduct nominations with integrity and transparency across district headquarters. The process covers 353 directly elected members of Parliament, 146 District Woman Representatives, and 20 Special Interest Group positions.

Candidates must submit nomination forms signed by two registered voters and provide proof of the 3 million shilling fees paid through the Uganda Revenue Authority online system. Each aspirant may bring two vehicles carrying a maximum of 10 people, provided they are equipped with police stickers. Campaign harmonization meetings run from Oct. 24 through Oct. 27, and official campaigns begin on Nov. 10 and continue until Jan. 13.

Police spokesperson Patrick Onyango announced joint security deployments at nomination centers to maintain order and prevent disruptions. Candidates accessing the commission headquarters in Ntinda will enter through Kyambogo traffic lights, and police will escort them to Nalya via Northern Bypass after nominations. Polling for presidential and parliamentary elections occurs on Jan. 15, 2026.
