On Thursday, Alaska was shaken by a magnitude 5.0 earthquake, just as it was recovering from severe flooding. The quake hit 39 miles off Akutan, a small town near a major fish processing plant, and was felt in Dutch Harbor.
This earthquake added to the chaos in western Alaska, where Typhoon Halong's remnants caused a massive storm surge. The surge destroyed homes, killed one person, and left two missing. Coastal villages like Kipnuk and Kwigillingok were severely affected, with some communities submerged.
In a major airlift, hundreds of people were flown to Anchorage. State teams are working to find housing for evacuees and prepare for more aftershocks.
