Trinidadians feared dead in US military strike on drug vessel

Police in Trinidad and Tobago are investigating reports that two citizens may have been among six people killed in a U.S. military strike on a vessel allegedly transporting drugs from Venezuela. U.S. President Donald Trump confirmed that the strike targeted six "narcoterrorists" smuggling narcotics from Venezuela to the U.S.

Trinidadian police are working to confirm if two men from Las Cuevas were on board the destroyed vessel. One of the missing men, 26-year-old Chad Joseph, was identified by his family, who said he had been staying in Venezuela for the past three months. Another possible victim, known only as Samaroo, is also reported to be from Las Cuevas.

In response to U.S. actions, Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro ordered military exercises to defend the country. The incident follows Trinidad and Tobago Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar’s controversial support for U.S. strikes against drug traffickers, calling for more forceful action against cartels. Authorities in Trinidad are working with Venezuelan officials and the U.S. Embassy to confirm the identities of the victims.
